Reflexology to support clients' preconception health
1 in 6 couples in the UK have difficulty conceiving. Reflexology is thought to help couples with fertility problems by promoting blood circulation around the body, strengthening the immune system, balancing the hormone production necessary for conception to occur and promoting good strong health and vitality in the reproductive organs. This can include helping to regulate periods, promote ovulation, reduce PMS, reduce the chances of miscarriage and also help increase sperm quality and quantity.
Fertility problems and assisted conception can be very stressful and a course of reflexology can also provide the relaxation needed to help return the body to its natural balance ready for parenthood. All of these benefits, are important for both natural conception and to support those going through assisted conception or IVF treatments.
An audit conducted in August 2024 of Sole Therapy Reflexology clients, identified that 64% of clients coming for treatments to support their fertility, who had more than 2 sessions, conceived and had successful pregnancies using these specialist techniques (this includes clients with natural cycles and those supported whilst going through assisted fertility treatments).

Women with low ovarian reserve often consider natural therapies, such as reflexology after failed IVF treatment. Stress produces cortisol and prolactin that can prevent ovulation. A recent study concluded that stress reduces conception probabilities throughout the fertile window. Reflexology does not over stimulate the ovaries, but supports the normal functioning of the ovary, and it has been shown to reduce the impact of stress upon the body (see reflexology stress research here).
Male fertility has decreased significantly in the last 25 years, and it is now believed that male fertility can be a factor in up to 60% of fertility cases for couples. Therefore, supporting men during this process is very important. A reduction in stress is vital as stress can affect sperm DNA. Reflexology focuses on supporting a client and their fertility whilst reducing the impact of stress within the body (see reflexology stress research here).

Three months is the best time for couples to start preparing for conception, as it takes this long to produce healthy sperm and one month for a healthy ovum. Ideally both the male and female partners would have reflexology (foot or hand), particularly in the cases of unexplained infertility, but this is not essential.
